Need Help looking for a book. Teen fiction greek mythology. Has nothing to do with Percy Jackson?

It has a tree on the cover i think. In the story his grandma dies but comes back from the Underworld as cat to protect him. His teacher is superhuman(or part of some special group or something). Need to know title!
